A message to our members

Two credit unions you already trust. One stronger future.

Sky Federal Credit Union and On Tap Credit Union are proposing to join together — same local service, same not-for-profit, member-owned structure, more strength behind every account.

Why this matters

Not a takeover. Not a rescue. A choice, made from strength.

Both credit unions are financially healthy. Neither one had to do this. We're proposing it because together, we can do more for you than either of us can do alone — more branches, more lending power, more technology, without losing what made you choose a credit union in the first place.

Still member-owned

Now an owner of something bigger

Not a bank buyout. You keep your ownership stake, and it now sits behind a stronger, combined credit union — $671.3MM in assets and 32,171 members, instead of Sky alone. Same not-for-profit, member-owned structure, more institution behind your stake in it.

A merger of peers

Both sides are strong

Sky and On Tap are each financially sound on their own. This is two healthy organizations choosing to grow together, not one bailing out the other.

Same values

Founded the same way

Both credit unions were started by working people who wanted somewhere fair to put their money — Montana railroad workers in 1935, Colorado brewery workers in 1954.

◆ The short version

You're not just a customer of a bigger institution — you're an owner of one. As a member-owner, your stake now sits behind a credit union more than three times Sky's current size, with more resources behind every account, without a single branch closing or losing the local, member-first service you signed up for.

What stays the same

The things you're worried about are the things we protected.

We know what a merger usually means at a bank. This isn't that. Here's what does not change.

✓
Your money is safe

Your account works exactly the way it does today, and it's still federally insured by the NCUA up to at least $250,000, same as before.

✓
You'll still be called Sky

Your branch keeps the Sky name and the local team you know. (Sky's federal charter does change as part of this merger — see the FAQ below for exactly what that means and what it doesn't.)

✓
Your branch stays open

Sky and On Tap don't overlap anywhere. There are no planned branch closures as part of this merger.

✓
Local service, local decisions

Lending and service decisions continue to be made by people local to you — not by a call center in another state.

✓
Familiar faces

The people who know your name behind the counter aren't going anywhere, and both CEOs continue to help lead the combined organization.

✓
Still a credit union

Not-for-profit, member-owned, member-first — the model doesn't change, it just gets more resources behind it.

✓
You'll be told before anything changes

If anything about how you bank does eventually change — like a system update — you'll get notice in writing well in advance.

What you gain

Everything you have today. Plus a lot more.

More reach

8Combined branches across Montana and Colorado
5,000+Shared branches nationwide you can also use
30,000+Surcharge-free ATMs, wherever you travel
$671.3MMIn combined assets — a bigger financial base behind your deposits
Technology investment
Greater investment in digital banking, cybersecurity and fraud prevention than either credit union could fund alone.
◆ Community impact, combined

$146,168 in community giveback donations annually, combined — more capacity to invest back into the communities both credit unions already call home.

Community involvement
Community giving, side by side — not just in dollars, but in seminars, scholarships and volunteer hours.

More products, more capacity

  • Business banking and agricultural lending expertise, from On Tap's growth experience and Sky's ag-lending roots
  • Increased lending capacity for mortgages, vehicles and small business
  • Enhanced digital and mobile banking
  • Stronger fraud prevention and cybersecurity protecting your accounts
  • Continued focus on competitive rates and member value — that doesn't change because it's core to who we are

Financial strength

The numbers behind the promise.

A merger is easy to promise and hard to prove. Here's the combined financial picture, book value, as of June 30, 2026 — the same numbers your credit union's leadership and regulators are looking at.

$671.3MMCombined total assets
$432.0MMCombined loans
$568.9MMCombined member deposits
8.77%Net worth to assets — well above the regulatory "well-capitalized" threshold
76%Loan-to-share ratio
136Combined employees
◆ What this means for you

Net worth to assets of 8.77% is comfortably above the level regulators consider "well-capitalized." A loan-to-share ratio of 76% is healthy, not stretched. This is a financially sound institution taking on a financially sound partner — not two weak organizations propping each other up.

Questions members are asking

Straight answers, no fine print tricks.

Is this really happening, or is it a rumor?+
It's real, and it's public. Everything you need is on this page, and you'll receive official voting materials by mail.
What happens to my money?+
Nothing changes today. Your account works exactly the way it did yesterday, and it remains federally insured by the NCUA. If your account ever needs to move to a new system, you'll get advance written notice, not a surprise.
Will my branch close?+
No. Sky and On Tap don't have overlapping branches, and no branch closures are planned as part of this merger.
Are we being bought by a bank?+
No. This is a proposed partnership between two financially strong, member-owned credit unions that believe they can serve members better together. It stays a not-for-profit credit union.
What do I gain as a Sky Federal Credit Union member?+

You gain the strength and opportunities of a financial institution more than three times Sky's current size, while preserving the personal relationships, local connection, and familiar experience you value today. It's about gaining the economies of scale without losing the economies of relationships.

Together, we'll be better positioned to deliver:

  1. Greater lending capacity to support our communities. More resources to help members achieve their financial goals, support local businesses, and invest in the communities we call home.
  2. Greater financial strength and value for members. Increased lending opportunities can support stronger earnings, creating greater potential to offer competitive deposit rates, higher dividends, and enhanced member benefits.
  3. Expanded expertise to meet your evolving needs. A broader team of financial professionals, greater resources, and enhanced capabilities to help members navigate an increasingly complex financial landscape.

Bigger Together. Personal as Ever.
The financial strength of a larger credit union. The heart, relationships, and local commitment of the Sky you know and trust.

Will rates change?+
The goal remains the same as it's always been: provide members the best value on both loans and deposits. That commitment doesn't change because of this merger — a larger, stronger balance sheet gives us more room to keep rates competitive, not less.
Will Sky still be called Sky?+
Yes, day to day — the Sky name, your branch, and the team you know all stay. What does change: Sky Federal Credit Union's separate federal charter ends as part of this merger, and Sky becomes a division operating under On Tap Credit Union's charter, which is why On Tap's name is what appears in legal and regulatory filings going forward. That's a real change in the legal structure, not just paperwork — but it does not change your account, your branch, or who you bank with locally.
Will I still see the same people?+
Yes. Both CEOs continue to help lead, and the staff you know at your branch are staying local.
What am I actually voting on, and does my vote count?+
You're voting on whether to approve the proposed merger between Sky Federal Credit Union and On Tap Credit Union. Every eligible Sky member gets one vote, and full details on eligibility will be included with your official voting materials.
Can members opposed to this be heard?+
Yes, and it's a regulatory right rather than a courtesy. Members may submit comments about the proposed merger to the NCUA, and the process for doing so is set out in the official notice. If you want to organize against this, the mechanism exists, and we're the ones telling you it does — a board that only wanted supportive members to vote would not be pointing you at it.
What if I have a question this page didn't answer?+
Reach out any time. Email skyanswers@skyfcu.org, call (406) 222-1750, or stop by any Sky branch and ask a team member in person.
